Join Our Mission to Advance Quantum Communication in Space

At Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH (qtlabs), we are at the forefront of innovation in optical and quantum-based communication technologies. Our team develops cutting-edge quantum key distribution (QKD) systems and optoelectronic solutions for space and terrestrial applications. Based in Vienna, our center of excellence drives technological advancements that secures communication around the world.

Quantum Technology Laboratories GmbH is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees!

The Role

Join us in building the next generation of secure quantum communication systems for space and beyond. As part of our interdisciplinary hardware team, you’ll design and develop high-performance electronics that enable cutting-edge quantum key distribution (QKD) and optical payloads for satellites and ground systems. From early concepts to flight-qualified hardware, you’ll take ownership across the full development stack - architecture, PCB design, testing, and verification.

This role is ideal for engineers who thrive in a hands-on, fast-learning environment, and who are motivated by working at the intersection of quantum physics, electronics, and space technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end hardware development: from system architecture down to board-level implementation and lab validation.
  • Design and implement high-throughput data acquisition and signal-processing electronics, including analog front-ends, timing, and high-speed digital interfaces.
  • Develop and optimize PCB layouts for performance, manufacturability, EMC, and reliability; drive DFM/DFT improvements with suppliers.
  • Build rapid prototypes and test fixtures to validate requirements and de-risk concepts; plan and execute bring-up, characterization and verification.
  • Select and qualify space-grade components; plan and lead part qualification campaigns with vendors and labs.
  • Collaborate closely with optical, FPGA, and software engineers to define clear system requirements and interfaces.
  • Perform detailed analyses (parts-stress, worst-case, FMEA/FMECA) under radiation, thermal, vibration, and EMC constraints.
  • Design noise-free analog power supplies and FPGA environments for high-speed, low-noise operation.
  • Participate in technical reviews and customer meetings; present trade studies, test results, and risk mitigations.

Your Profile

  • Hands-on experience in PCB design/layout, including stack-up definition, impedance control, length matching, and EMI/EMC design.
  • Strong lab skills: oscilloscopes, VNAs, spectrum analyzers, and root-cause analysis.
  • Solid understanding of high-speed DAQ architectures, synchronization, clocking, and data movers to FPGAs or SoCs.
  • Familiarity with space electronics reliability (radiation effects, derating, thermal design) and ECSS/MIL standards.
  • Experience with power integrity and analog design for mixed-signal systems.
  • Clear and confident technical communication in English (specifications, test plans, design reviews).
  • A collaborative mindset and ownership attitude; comfortable iterating quickly in an interdisciplinary environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in FPGA-based control and signal-processing environments.
  • Exposure to quantum communication, photonics, or optical systems.
  • Knowledge of radiation-tolerant design practices and part-screening methodologies.
  • Interest in space qualification and system-level engineering.

What we offer

  • A mission-driven environment developing quantum-secure communication for the space era.
  • Close collaboration with leading researchers and engineers in quantum optics, FPGA, and embedded systems.
  • Hands-on involvement in all phases - from prototype to flight model.
  • Flat hierarchies, ownership, and the opportunity to drive innovation in an emerging deep-tech sector.
  • A collaborative and innovative environment in Vienna, a global hub for quantum research and space technology.
  • Flexible work arrangements in a hybrid model combining remote and onsite collaboration
  • The opportunity to make a lasting impact on the future of quantum technologies
  • Balanced work-life integration for our employees
  • Attractive workplace with excellent infrastructure at Wienerberg
  • Great Italian espresso
  • Humorous and friendly work atmosphere

The minimum gross salary for this position is € 3,499.78 per month (based on full-time employment) in accordance with the collective agreement. However, there is a willingness to offer a higher salary depending on experience and qualifications.
